In the next few weeks, all the carriers will complete their 2008 pricing announcements. As we look at the future, it’s probably a good bet that these carriers’ rates aren’t going down any more than the cost of oil. So what’s the impact and action plan for your business? Given the size of the increases that have been announced so far, multichannel companies need to look at all the options open to them and develop short and long-term strategies to reduce the impact.

UPS has announced that they will be increasing Ground rates by 4.9% in 2008, which is equal to last year. (FedEx will most likely match the UPS Ground increase, but that information has not yet been released.) Under new rates, the Ground commercial zone 2, 1-lb. rate has increased 5.0% over last year—overall, a 16% increase over three years, from $3.62 in 2005 to $4.20 in 2008. For 1-70 lb. packages the average increase is 4.8%. However, if the majority of your shipments are in zones 4 or 5 –like many businesses are- the increase is about 5.16%. Depending on your warehouse location and the predominant zones in which you ship to customers, the impact could be more or less than this average. Meanwhile, the Ground residential minimum charge increased to $6.15, a combination of the base rate for zone 2 and the Ground residential surcharge. In a quick survey of shipping tables of 66 multichannel companies, we found that 71% of the tables were lower than this $6.15 minimum charge. Read the rest of this entry »

If you are taking a vaction, or you want to go on a road trip, it is likely that you will need to have your car or truck shipped. Many people choose to test the quality of their vehicles by taking them on extended road trips. It should be noted that attempting to drive a vehicle across country that is older than 10 years can be risky. It is also important to make sure the car is checked. There are a number of ways your car can be shipped to you, and the prices may vary depending on the distance. When your car is shipped, it can be transported by a larger vehicle, or someone can drive it for you.

There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to both methods. If you look under the road section of your local newspaper, you will often find individuals or companies that can drive your vehicle across country. The driver will basically drive the car for you, and you will authorize them to use the vehicle, and in some cases, you may have to pay them for the cost of gasoline. Many people don’t like using this option, because they don’t like the idea of giving control of their vehicle to someone they don’t know. However, this option is the cheapest, but it should only be used by reputable companies that have a proven track record. If you decide to let someone drive your car, do a criminal background check and make sure they don’t have any driving violations. Read the rest of this entry »

In today’s modern world it is not uncommon to hear of a person having a car shipped to their home. There are many different reasons for hiring a vehicle hauling company, but the preparations that you must make to the vehicle being shipped are always the same. You should consider all that is involved with the transport of an automobile before you decide that this is the right way to get your car to its destination. If you are purchasing a vehicle, and need it shipped to you, then you need to make sure that these preparations are being made on your behalf.

Weight Considerations

Most car shipping companies charge for a shipment based on its weight. This means that larger vehicles will always cost more than smaller vehicles. While you cannot help the weight of the vehicle itself, there are some things that you can do to cut down the overall weight you are charged for.

- Gasoline – Fuel can weight quite a bit if you consider a gas tank. Most tanks can carry anywhere from eleven to thirty gallons of gas. In order to cut the most weight from your shipment, make sure that the fuel tank is as close to empty as you can get it.

- Extra Seats – Many vans and some cars have extra seats that can be removed. If you can, remove these seats and ship them with the rest of your things or leave them at home. Read the rest of this entry »

Traveling internationally can open your eyes, mind, heart and soul. The gorgeous vistas, cultures, food, music and people can unlock the mysteries within you and the world. Sometimes we travel on foot other times we travel in vehicles but if we have a specific vehicle we want to ride along with us during our travels we must prepare its departure along with ours.

International Auto Shipping

It’s important to find an international auto shipping company that can assist and support you in this endeavor; for it’s not easy to do on your own.

Allowing the company 7 to 14 days to complete the trip on their W-E runs can make the time frames quicker on specific routes, but a majority of time it takes approximately 20 to 30 days for shipping. Planning enough time for the company to ship your vehicle overseas is needed. International shipping companies will let you plan up to two months before departure however the carrier will need about two weeks in advance for the shipment. If one needs the vehicle in advance companies will work on an individual basis with priority. You are normally scheduled to pick up your vehicle within 2 or 3 days. If your destination is inaccessible to you the shipping company will ask the driver to get as close as possible to your desired location, and if you are not available to pick up your vehicle it may have to go to a terminal for you to get it, but having an alternative part or family member to pick and sign the car for you is also a good idea. It is always best to have the car washed before getting it shipped. Remove any personal items, valuable or not, to avoid losses while the car is being transported. Since the weight of the car is one of the considerations on appraising the cost, remove any accessory that only adds up to the weight. Having the gas tank almost empty will also save up on the shipping cost. The alarm system should also be de-activated to save on the battery life. Make sure to have a spare set of keys when the vehicle is surrendered for shipment.

Insurance
Study well the insurance offered by the shipping company in order to be assured that any loss or damage to the vehicle throughout the transport will be covered. Secure a copy of the insurance policy before handing over the vehicle to the company.

Inspection
The company’s inspector must do a thorough inspection of the vehicle prior to the transport. The status of the car as well as all damages noted during the pre-transport inspection must be documented in what is called a Bill of Lading, a copy of which is given to the owner. Both the owner and the company representative must sign this. The owner must also talk to the company should there by any special arrangements needed for the vehicle. Upon the delivery to the destination, the vehicle must be re-examined for any new damage that might have occurred during the transport. If there is new damage, the owner must file an insurance claim within two weeks. Read the rest of this entry »
