By Lynda and Doug Bateman

Doug and Lynda Bateman at finish line of rim-to-rim hike, Bright Angel trail, south side Grand CanyonWe just got back from hiking the Grand Canyon. We left Sidney BC for the desert and canyon-lands of Utah, Colorado, and Arizona on May 1, 2005. Looping south from Winnipeg where we first visited our Mom and family, we drove west in our van camper on I-94 through North Dakota. Near Bismarck a Colorado low produced wind, fog, and torrents of rain that were soon forecast to be 3-ft. of snow. We hurried ahead of the system through the Black Hills of South Dakota to Deadwood and Lead and south to Cheyenne, Colorado. At Fort Collins, a huge black anvil-shaped cloud pounded the highway with golf-ball-sized hail. Beyond Denver, we anxiously drove through Loveland Pass, which at 11,800 ft could have become blocked by the late winter storm but Vale and Highway 70 on the other side of Eisenhower Tunnel were sunny and clear. At Fruita we were in Colorado Plateau country. We drove to the Colorado National Monument near Fruita State Park and purchased the $50 US National Parks Pass at the Visitors Centre. This national park includes a 23-mile high-level road with self-guided overlooks and trails. It was a good introduction for us of the geographical setting of Grand Canyon, Arches, Mesa Verde, Canyonlands, Bryce and Zion Canyon where we would have close encounters in the next few weeks.

Grandson Connor with the catch of the day.Terrific Toquart Bay
The Toquart Bay Marina is very close to the campground. We moored our boat for the duration of our visit for a daily fee. Once the boat was launched, rods, reels, bait, fuel and life jackets were loaded. Two crab traps were baited and lowered into the water; we were set up in one of the most beautiful spots in BC.

On the first day of fishing Al caught a 22 lb. Spring salmon, then later Connor caught his first 14 lb. Coho, this made him very happy; he knew then this was going to be an exciting fishing trip. The crab traps had crabs in them every time we checked, this gave us delicious dinners; cooked in salt water we ate them outside at our picnic table on the beach, which made the crabs taste even better.
