Unlike most inventions, the automobile was not an instant creation by an ingenious inventor; however there are certain landmark moments in the history of the modern day automobile. An estimated 100,000 patents are said to have created the car as we know it. Leonardo Da Vinci and Isaac Newton are credited with drawing up the first theoretical plans for a motor vehicle. Nicolas Joseph Cugnot was a French engineer and mechanic, in 1769 he invented the very first self-propelled road vehicle using a steam engine. The French Army used the vehicle to move artillery. This was followed by Nicolas with the design of a tricycle with the ability to carry four passengers and powered by a steam engine. Interestingly enough Cugnot is also the first person to be involved in a motor vehicle accident as he drove one of the vehicles into a stone wall in 1771.

There is debate as to whether the steam powered road vehicles of Nicolas Joseph Cugnot can be categorized as automobiles. People who accept the notion call him the first inventor of the automobile. The design was further improved by Onesiphore Pecqeur in France. In the U.S. Oliver Evans received the patent for a steam-powered land vehicle. A road carriage powered by steam was built in Richard Trevithick in Great Britain in 1801. Steam powered vehicles became relatively popular and many improvements were made to the original designs. There are a variety of definitions for what actually is considered a classic car. One of the most popular definitions of a classic car is the one supplied by the Classic Car Club of America. The Classic Car Club of America insists that a car cannot be a classic if it was manufactured after the year 1948. Also, the club defines a classic car as a “fine or distinctive automobile, either American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948.” Also, a classic car was high-priced when it was brand new and they were built in limited quantities. Any member of the Classic Car Club of America can petition for the club to add a car to their list of what they consider classic cars but the petition will be placed under a large amount of scrutiny before any decision is made.

Individual states within the United States have their own definitions and requirements for what is a classic car for the sole purpose of antique vehicle registration with those individual states. Most states’ definitions include that a classic car is one that was “manufactured 15 years prior to the current year and has been maintained or restored to a condition that is in conformity with manufacturer specifications and appearance.” Read the rest of this entry »

As I stated in my previous article – It’s no big secret – gas prices are rapidly rising. This additional cost for fuel has become a financial burden for many consumers. This second installment to my first article gives more tips and advice on how to save money when filling your car up with gas.

Previously I mentioned the merits of performing regular routine maintenance on your vehicle. The benefit to do this will greatly reduce your fuel costs and save you money. It’s also a good idea to start a fuel log. The rational behind this is simple if you record all of your gas purchases and the mileage you travel you will start to develop the habit of knowing exactly how much that you are spending in fuel costs. Make sure to keep notes on where the cheapest gas stations can be found. You’ll want to use this log to see patterns of driving that you can change in order to cut down on your fuel costs.

Did you know that the average fuel economy of new cars and trucks in the United States and Canada has increased by over 130 percent for cars and 75 percent for trucks? This means that you are driving a better more efficient vehicle, which should equate to a lower fuel bill. However this depends on the level of maintenance you perform on your automobile. If you notice that your gas efficiency is decreasing it could be an indicating factor that your car needs servicing. Don’t hesitate to perform your routine maintenance. Do so will end up costing you more money then you need to spend on gasoline and could ultimately lead to more expensive car repairs. Read the rest of this entry »

There are a variety of definitions for what actually is considered a classic car. One of the most popular definitions of a classic car is the one supplied by the Classic Car Club of America. Individual states within the United States have their own definitions and requirements for what is a classic car for the sole purpose of antique vehicle registration with those individual states. Most states’ definitions include that a classic car is one that was “manufactured 15 years prior to the current year and has been maintained or restored to a condition that is in conformity with manufacturer specifications and appearance.”

The Classic Car Club of America was founded in 1952 by a group of car owners that were being excluded from car shows because they were told that the cars they owned were too modern. The list of cars that have been deemed classic by the Classic Car Club of America looks like this: A.C, Adler, Alfa Romero, Alvis, Amilcar, Armstrong-Siddeley, Aston Martin, Auburn, Austro-Daimler, Ballot, Bentley, Benz, Blackhawk, BMW, Brewster, Brough Superior, Bucciali, Bugatti, Buick, Cadillac, Chrysler, Cord, Cunningham, Dagmar, Daimler, Darracq, Delage, Delahaye, Delaunay Belleville, Doble, Dorris, Duesenberg, du Pont, E Icar, Excelsior, Farman, Fiat, Franklin, FN, Graham-Paige, Hispano-Suiza, Horch, Hotchkiss, Hudson, Humber, Invicta, Isotta-Fraschini, Itala, Jaguar, Jensen, Jordan, Julian, Kissel, Lagonda, Lanchester, Lancia, LaSalle, Lincoln, Lincoln-Continental, Locomobile, Marmon, Maserati, Maybach, McFarlan, Mercedes, Mercedes-Benz, Mercer, M.G. Minerva, N.A.G., Nash, Packard, Peerless, Pierce-Arrow, Railton, Raymond Mays, Renault, Reo, Revere, Roamer, Rochet Schneider, Rohr, Rolls-Royce, Ruxton, Squire, S.S. Jaguar, Stearns-Knight, Stevens-Duryea, Steyr, Studebaker, Stutz, Sunbeam, Talbot, Talbot-Lago, Tatra, Triumph, Vauxhall, Voisin, Wills Ste Claire and Willys-Knight.

Not all models of the makes mentioned above are accepted by the Classic Car Club of America as classic cars. To check if a model is considered a classic car by the Classic Car Club of America you will have to check their list of approved classics. They are listed in alphabetical order by the make and then divided into the models that are acceptable. Classic cars are one of the most popular hobbies around today. Ask anyone. Especially ask television host Jay Leno. Leno owns quite a few classic cars of his own and they have appeared on his television show as well as others such as Home Improvement. Classic car shows are very popular across the country and occur on a year round basis.
