Just how difficult is it to find car parts online? A recent Google search on “car parts” brought up over 25 million hits, most of which had a very great deal to do with car parts. The UK has a wealth of car breakers, scrap yards, car salvage and warehouses, and parts for sale on the internet. Auto traders abound and many sites have search features where you can input a specific part, and they will locate it for you. There are deals of every kind imaginable, from combined shipping rates to discounts guaranteed to make the stingiest mechanic happy.

Some sites specialise, in old car parts for example, or in particular parts, like catalytic converters, brakes, or radiators. There are sites for foreign cars, American cars, vintage cars, lorries and caravans. If you have a part need, check the internet first. Using search engines on the various sites is generally an easy task. You put in what you want and hit search. Results that come back generally are in order of relevance to the words you used, so it helps to be specific, if you can. People who have used the car parts locating services on a variety of sites have reported that within minutes of their requests they have received notification of parts available from the vendors who are participating. Buying parts on line is fast, and saves time, which saves money. Read the rest of this entry »

Many events in automotive history can be attributed to the creative dream and obsession of a single man to realize his dreams. The Ford and the Jaguar were examples of this. The Indianapolis 500 also began as one man s dream. Carl Fisher of Indianapolis, Indiana conceived the idea of building a racetrack for car manufacturers to test their equipment against that of other manufacturers. And he believed that the general public would be willing to pay to watch these events.

Carl had some friends who were also interested in his dream. Together they searched for and found land, which they were able to buy for $72,000. They then incorporated under the name of Indianapolis Motor Speedway Company.

Although scheduled to open on June 5, 1909, there were several construction delays so the first race was not held until August 19, 1909. Unfortunately, this event was marked by tragedy. Three competitors and two spectators were killed while several other people were injured.

Following these sad occurrences, Fisher announced that the track would be made safer. After paving the track, and installing guardrails, Fisher re opened the track on December 17, 1909. Many successful events were now held and plans were soon in the works for a new, bigger and better track, which was completed in 1911. Read the rest of this entry »

Auto-racing has grown into one of the world’s most popular sports. Men have been competing ever since the dawn of mankind, the most magnificent manifestation of this desire to compete occurred in the Olympics. Ever since vehicles were built, they have been used for racing. Historically, people raced on horse-drawn buggies. After cars were built, they became the popular vehicles used for racing. On April 28 1887 the first ever race was organized in Paris but there was only one competitor, the first ever contest occurred on July 22 1894, organized by the Paris magazine Le Petit Journal. The next year a race from Paris to Bordeaux was organized. The Gordon Bennett Cup started the tradition of international racing competitions.

City to city racing gained popularity and many races were organized from Paris to other major cities connected to Paris in Europe. However, in 1903 Marcel Renault suffered from a fatal accident in the Paris-Madrid race, the accident caused nine fatalities forcing the French Government to abandon the race and ban open-road racing altogether. However, the interest in the sport did not end there. In fact, car manufacturers started producing pure racing cars. Read the rest of this entry »
